Fall weather can be unpredictable. One minute it's freezing cold...and then the temperature starts to rise. Whether you're working on the farm or at the jobsite, dressing for outdoor work in the fall can be tricky.

You're going to want to layer up so you can remove and put layers back on as the weather and activity level dictates.

Here are some tips for layering workwear to help you stay more comfortable on the job, so you can focus on the task at hand.

The Base Layer

For those colder days, you'll want to start with a thin base layer, such as long underwear. It gives you a warm base underneath your bulkier clothing.

The best way to stay warm is to stay dry. Look for base layers made from moisture-wicking fabric.

The fabric pulls moisture away from your body, keeping you warm and dry. Wool or synthetic fabrics are both a great option.

Especially if you're doing something that requires you to be stationary for long periods of time, a nice thermal base layer can be the only thing between being miserably cold and effortlessly comfortable.

But take note, if you're doing a lot of active manual labor, you'll produce a lot of body heat, and thermals can get really hot really quick in those scenarios.

You don't want to get so warm that you have to strip down to your skivvies just to regulate your body temperature.

In that case, the best course of action might be to ditch the long sleeves and go with a good T-shirt as a base layer.

The Middle Layer

A middle layer can give you better insulation when it's colder outside, and also provide a comfortable outer layer for when the temps go up and you need to shed a layer of clothing.

A quality work shirt should be built to not only help you get the job done, but keep you comfortable all day. Flannel, chambray and twill button down shirts all work well when paired with a base layer.

Once you get going, sometimes your body heat and a good work shirt is all you need to stay comfortable. If you know you're going to be really active on the job, you might want to skip the base layer and start at the mid layer with a long sleeve tee.

The Outer Layer

The outer layer is meant to protect you from the elements.

This outer layer should protect you from wind, rain, and cold while you're hard at work. It should have enough room for your other layers while providing you enough mobility to get your work finished.

This could be a super brawny flannel shirt or a duck jacket, depending on how windy and cold it is.

If you're going to be stationary and its cold out, some flex duck bib overalls might be the right choice for the outer layer on your lower body.

Fall Footwear

Keep your feet warm and dry with a quality pair of work boots and thick, warm boot socks. Some work boots are waterproof, or you can wear work rain boots, depending on the weather and your work environment.

Some nice soft toe work boots should give you enough room for an extra pair of socks without pinching.
